Hu Jintao Meets with Brunei Sultan: Promoting South China Sea Cooperation and Maintaining Peace and Stability

Hu Jintao said that Chinese relations maintained a good momentum of development. China attaches importance to the good-neighborly friendship and cooperation with Brunei. At present, Brunei is implementing a diversified economic development strategy. China is also accelerating industrial adjustment and upgrading and increasing foreign investment. The two countries should closely integrate bilateral cooperation with their respective characteristics, advantages, and development strategies, support each other, and develop together. China is willing to work together with Wen to maintain high-level exchanges, increase cooperation in economy, trade and investment, promote infrastructure construction projects, actively carry out energy cooperation, expand cultural exchanges, and promote new and greater development of Chinese relations.

Hasanal agreed with Hu Jintao's evaluation of the relations between the two countries and indicated that the relations between the two countries have developed well. The two sides have maintained close high-level exchanges and have effectively promoted the cooperation between the two governments and the people. Wen Fang thanked China for providing assistance for the development of Brunei's agriculture and fishing related projects. Wen hopes to promote the cooperation between enterprises of the two countries in investment, energy, petrochemical and other fields. Hassanal reiterated that Brunei will continue to adhere to the one-China policy.

Hu Jintao pointed out that at present, profound and complex changes are taking place in the foreign situation, and there are many unstable and uncertain factors in the world economy. In the face of challenges, Asian countries should work together and cooperate in good faith to achieve mutual benefit and common development. China supports ASEAN’s dominant position in East Asian cooperation and supports the ASEAN integration process. The Chinese and Chinese countries have maintained good coordination and cooperation within the framework of China-ASEAN cooperation. Brunei will assume the presidency of ASEAN next year. The Chinese side will give its full support and is willing to maintain close communication with the literary side to jointly advance East Asian cooperation in the right direction.

Hasanal said Wen is willing to work with China to promote the development of ASEAN-China relations. Brunei hopes to work closely with China and ASEAN and implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.
