Volvo Truck Active Safety System helps drivers avoid traffic accidents

The first results of EuroFOT were announced on June 26 in Brussels. The conclusion clearly shows that Volvo Truck Active Safety System can help drivers avoid traffic accidents.

On June 26, 2012, the Gothenburg, Sweden, EuroFOT project has been going on for nearly four years. The project has a total of 28 partner participants representing the EU to conduct research on systems that help car and truck drivers detect risks, prevent accidents and improve driving efficiency.

Volvo Trucks, part of the Swedish team, participated in the study with Volvo Car Corporation and Chalmers University of Technology.

“Our part of the project studied 30 trucks operated by DHL Tradeteam in the UK and Nijhof Wassink in the Netherlands. We tested the effectiveness of the three systems: Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning System and Lane Keeping System.” Volvo Trucks Project manager Karsten Heinig said.

Reduce risk by 15%

The adaptive cruise system (ACC) and the forward collision warning system (FCW) act simultaneously to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front to avoid rear-end collisions. Studies have shown that when trucks equipped with the above system are driving on the highway, the number of rear-end collisions is reduced by up to 15%. The study also found that this data has considerable potential for improvement.

"The system uses less than half of the driving time on average. If you increase the use time, you can further reduce the accident. We reduced the guidance and training of the driver during the test. In the user-friendliness of the system, we have some technologies. The scope of work needs to be done,” said Karsten Heinig, Volvo truck project manager.

As for the lane keeping system (LKS), since the statistical basis is too small, no reliable conclusion on accident prevention can be drawn. However, it has been proven that this system does help drivers to keep lanes on the road more steadily. ACC, FCW, and LKS do not have any negative impact on the driving behavior of the driver. “We are sometimes asked if we are concerned that these systems will interfere with drivers or distract them from driving. However, EuroFOT's data analysis does not show this effect,” said Karsten Heinig.

In the study, each truck was equipped with five cameras: one facing forward, shooting the driver’s field of vision in the direction of the vehicle; one shooting the blind spot on the side of the copilot; one shooting the right foot of the driver; and one fixed on the A-pillar. , shooting the driver's driving behavior; one is facing the driver's face, recording the driver's eye activity.

Combining data from the truck's onboard control unit (ECU), including parameters such as current speed, the data captured by the camera provides a total of approximately 70TB (1TB = 1000GB) of data. There are 4 million kilometers of truck data available for analysis, and another 4 million kilometers of system data output by Chalmers University of Technology. These data will be provided to the academic community for reference.

"These materials can be used as a rich resource for the development of safer roads," said Karsten Heinig.

EuroFOT Introduction The EuroFOT project is funded by the European Union with participation from 28 organizations such as vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, research institutes and universities. More than 1,000 cars and trucks have been studied. Volvo Cars, Volvo Trucks and Chalmers University of Technology collaborated on the Swedish part of the project. They developed the appropriate research methods to obtain data for analysis.
