The transparent world of plastics

The latest Rinspeed concept car - "eXasis" is a drivable "glass" car with a fully transparent body and a Makrolon (R) baseplate.
Ian Paterson, a member of Bayer MaterialScience’s innovative management committee, described the general reaction when people saw prototypes: “Everyone who sees eXasis at first glance tends to think of it as a glass car, but in fact they are from Bayer Heights. Technology made of transparent plastic." "A lot of people just talk about innovation, and we are a joint partner to achieve innovation." Plastic experts from Bayer MaterialScience, using Makrolon (R) polycarbonate to show the public the eXasis transparent charm.
Plastics can also make the transparent world eXasis have the appearance of insects, a shiny yellow body, and prominent wheels, as if it were a fusion of legendary racing cars and off-road vehicles of the Auto Union for the last half century. Due to its ultra-light plastic construction, the car weighs only 750 kg.
Switzerland's Mecaplex created the Makrolon(R) casing for eXasis. KRD, a German hard film specialist, applied a light yellow film to highlight the car's aluminum load-bearing chassis. The chassis seems to be cut from a single piece of material, but it actually consists of several partitions. Despite this, the entire architecture gives a sleek, lightweight feel, while using Bayer MaterialScience's Desmodur(R) and Desmophen(R) to give Lesonal a chrome-like finish, highlighting this feature. In order to polish the handle and lever surface, Bayer experts propose a special soft-fitting coating based on water-based adhesives. The only goal is to create a superb visual aesthetic and excellent driving comfort.
The two passengers are seated in special seats designed together with Recaro. Each seat consists of twelve transparent Makrolon(R) ribs - the same number of ribs in the human body. Headrests and armrests are made of transparent Technogel(R).
Transparent indicators and functional displays are definitely a great highlight, both technically and visually. They are just as floating on both sides of the driver's field of vision. Through touch, various functions are displayed and controlled. Each touchpad has a transparent CD/DVD Makrolon(R) blank covered with a conductive Baytron(R) coating from HC Starck to trigger the function switch. The display was developed by Kaba, a Swiss security and closure system specialist. Personalized car safety systems are also integrated into the touchpad.
The tire used was a Pirelli 22-inch high-performance P-zero model mounted on a five-spoke wheel manufactured by German wheel manufacturer AEZ. The wheels are decorated with “inlaid” Makrolon(R) transparent material that looks like a small window.
In addition to the fascinating smooth contour lines in the car's transparent body, eXasis is "sharp" and clearly has a distinctive self-characteristic. However, everyone who has enjoyed the fun of eXasis is very much in agreement with this: When the car is driving at high speed, looking through the transparent floor overlooking the ground is absolutely thrilling.
