Scientists observe the fish's movement pattern to create the best sensor for the robot

Scientists create more realistic robots by studying animal movement patterns and sensory feedback. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States have recently discovered that fish oscillating, while seemingly random, is actually a constant motion that is precisely calculated.

According to a study published by Johns Hopkins University in Current Biology, by observing the tiny movements of fish, it is helpful to build more suitable sensors to construct robots.

The research team created an augmented reality (AR) background to observe changes in fish's feedback as a result of different environments. Fish produce a weak electric field around the body to help them communicate with other fish and swim in the water.

The researchers first changed the surrounding environment by moving the tubes synchronously with the fish in motion, making it harder for fish to get the same amount of data. By sensation feedback from the fish, the researchers found that the fish swim less because they spend less effort but get more feedback.

When robots are equipped with vision and various sensors to perform complex tasks more accurately, researchers hope to gain insight into the movement of the creatures to design robots that deploy smart sensors for a better interactive experience.
