The legend about vampires is now familiar. According to foreign media reports, scientists recently discovered that a so-called "vampire" was a victim of cholera when archaeological activities were carried out in a cemetery in Poland.
Scientists excavated 285 dead bodies in a cemetery in a small town in northwestern Poland. Among them were six corpses with strange ways of burial that attracted the attention of scientists, including an adult male, three adult females, a teenage girl and a child. Among the six bodies that were considered to be vampires, five were placed on the throat and abdomen with a sickle, meaning that they could not be revived, and the stone was placed on the chin of the two men, meaning that they could not be bitten by others.
Scientists involved in the excavation conducted an enamel analysis of the bodies of six vampires in the cemetery. They found that the six deceased were local residents before their death. According to the time of death, Eastern Europe was experiencing cholera at that time, and these people were most likely the first victims of the cholera epidemic.
The archeological work was organized by Dr. Lesley Gregoricka from the University of South Alabama. In order to ascertain the identity of the deceased, Dr. Gregory and her colleagues used isotopes. Sixty of the deceased's caries were compared and the results were compared with those of local animals. The results showed that the six people who were considered vampires did not come from a foreign land but were local residents.
Dr. Gregory Card said: “People in the late Middle Ages did not understand how the epidemic spread. They could not explain cholera in science, so they would seek supernatural explanations. In this case they speculated on vampires. At that time, many people believed that the deceased were vampires, so the local residents adopted funeral rituals that could ward off evil spirits. In the 17th and 18th centuries, some disabled people, illegitimate children, unbaptized people, and those who died were all considered dead. After the rebirth of the vampire, and in history, due to water pollution, Poland experienced cholera in the 17th century. Most people regard the first victim in the epidemic as a devil who can be transformed into a vampire after death.â€
