Based on the latest data from the US Department of Commerce's Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA), the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that US applications for import permits in December 2008 were 2,090,000 net tons, a decrease from the 2,726 million net tons recorded in November. It was 15%, a decrease of 10% from the actual 2.14 million net tons imported in the preliminary statistics for November. Among them, the import volume of finished steel imports was 1.797 million net tons, which was 13% lower than the actual statistics of the actual import volume of 2.058 million net tons in November.
For the whole year of 2008 (including December SIMA data and preliminary statistics for November), steel imports and finished steel imports were 31.703 million net tons and 25.573 million net tons, respectively, compared to the corresponding 33.244 million net tons in 2007 and 26.587 million net tons respectively. Declined by 5% and 3%.
In December 2008, the countries with the largest number of applications for import licenses of finished steel were classified as China (488,000 net tons), India (132,000 net tons), South Korea (102,000 net tons), and Japan (94,000 net tons).
