Annick Bay, a Ph.D. student at the University of Namur in Belgium, said: The most important direction of this research is that it shows how much we can learn by carefully observing nature. In fireflies, a certain amount of light is reflected back into the lantern by the stratum corneum of its outer shell. But in some fireflies, this reflection can be reduced by the arrangement of jagged scales, which means more light is spilled and the fireflies look brighter.

A layer of coating on the LED lamp that simulates the function of the scales of the firefly not only improves energy efficiency but also reduces the amount of energy required for illumination. Annick Bay said: We refer to the structure of the edge of the factory roof, because the top of the scales are convex and slightly inclined, a bit like the roof of the factory. There is also an added benefit that this energy-efficient coating can be applied to current LED lamps.
