Fuji Electric System Development New Pipe Wear Detection Device

Fuji Electric Systems has developed a device that monitors the wear and tear of pipes in thermal/atomic power plants. The method used in the past is to use the reflection of ultrasonic pulses to detect, but this method needs to remove the insulation material, and the restoration work is still needed after the detection. The new device can be tested without removing the insulation material, making the process easier.

The new device measures the pipe thickness using the radiation attenuation rate. The working principle is that the radiation source emits radiation on one side of the pipeline, and the radiation detector disposed on the other side detects the radiation passing through the pipeline and calculates the total thickness of the pipeline wall. Since the thickness and density of the insulating material are set in advance, the attenuation rate can be corrected based on this, so that it is not necessary to remove the insulating material.

By comparing the wall thicknesses of different inspection points, it is possible to find the parts with fast wear speed. The device is used in an 80-500A pipe having a thickness of 50 mm or less and an outer diameter of 710 mm or less in a state in which the heat insulating material is attached. Moreover, in the case of water in the pipeline, the influence of water can also be corrected, so that the equipment in operation can also be tested.

Fuji is preparing to use this device to provide pipeline inspection services. And in October 2006, began to accept the commission. After that, the feasibility of the sales of the inspection device and the training of the detection method will also be considered.
