Digitalization and New Energy Leading the Development of Commercial Vehicles

During the 2016 Hanover International Commercial Vehicle Show, from the 21st to the 22nd of this month, the opening day of the media, vehicle manufacturers such as Daimler, MAN Truck, Volvo, Iveco, Bosch, ZF, and other parts suppliers introduced new models and new models. Products and new technologies have outlined the development trend of global commercial vehicle digitalization and new energy.

Heavy trucks, vans and buses are the "protagonists" of commercial motor show. According to Matthias Weisman, chairman of the German Federation of Automobile Manufacturers, commercial vehicles have always been regarded as providers of mobile and logistics services, and digital and alternative-energy-based power systems will bring huge scale to the world's growing transport industry. Opportunities make it more efficient and environmentally friendly. Weisman pointed out that the most important trend in the development of international commercial vehicles is "digital transformation" marked by car networking and automatic driving.

The Bosch Group's "Truck of the Future" research project shows that the "future truck" front windshield will be a semi-transparent touch display. Cameras and sensors replace the reflectors. Truck drivers can quickly understand real-time vehicle conditions on the touch screen. Data and operations; through the "Internet of Things Cloud", "Future Truck" can obtain road information, traffic conditions and other vehicle information on the road in real time. Marcus Hein, a member of the Bosch Group Management Committee, said that the “future truck” can be connected to a convoy in a non-contact manner on a closed highway to achieve full-automatic driving with a stable distance of 10 to 15 meters. During automatic driving, the driver can free up his hand to arrange the next transportation plan.

Similar high degree of digital applications are also reflected in the concept van released by Mercedes-Benz. The body not only eliminates the mirror but also eliminates the steering wheel. In addition, there are two drones on the top of the car body. According to the introduction of Mercedes-Benz, the Vision van mainly targets urban freight, using digitization to increase freight efficiency, and at the same time using drones to solve the “last mile” problem of urban freight by “fast zero discharge”.

In terms of power systems, Weisman pointed out that in the future, the energy supply of commercial vehicles will tend to diversify. As far as long-distance transportation is concerned, diesel will still play a key role in trucks; in urban transportation, the trend of using alternative energy sources is very clear.

Weisman said: "On the vans and buses, pure electric or hybrid power has become increasingly important. In the near future, trucks will also use these new sources of energy when transporting goods locally." It is not difficult to see that digital or new Energyization, and even the intelligence of the entire city's logistics system, the future of commercial vehicles will be more economical, more environmentally friendly, and more secure. It will further increase road utilization efficiency.
