China's first electromagnetic monitoring satellite enters the test phase of the whole satellite

[China Instrument Network Instrument R&D] reporter learned from the 2017 National Earthquake Directors' Meeting on January 17 that a new weapon for China's earthquake monitoring - China's first self-developed electromagnetic monitoring test satellite has entered the testing stage of the whole star, and is expected to be under this year Six months will be selected for launch and put into use. At that time, China will become the only country with on-orbit multi-load, high-precision seismic monitoring test satellites.

The electromagnetic monitoring test satellite is the first space-based platform for the three-dimensional seismic observation system in China and opens up a new approach for earthquake monitoring and prediction in China. It can take advantage of the large dynamics, wide viewing angles, and all-weather characteristics of space-to-surface observations. Through acquiring global electromagnetic field, ionospheric plasma, and high-energy particle observation data, it conducts ionospheric dynamic real-time monitoring and seismic precursor tracking in China and its surrounding areas, making up for Insufficient ground observations.

What is the relationship between electromagnetic and earthquake? Scientists have made an image metaphor. Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon produced by the movement of the earth's crust. Earth's crust movement can cut the magnetic lines of the earth or generate electromagnetic radiation through "frictional electrification".

Shen Xuhui, deputy chief engineer of the electromagnetic monitoring test satellite engineering, told reporters that during the five years of orbital operation of the electromagnetic monitoring test satellite, it will use standard methods to carry out electromagnetic monitoring of earthquakes with magnitudes of more than 6 in our country and more than seven levels in the world, through a large amount of data accumulation and The earthquake case analysis is expected to find the laws and promote the development of earthquake prediction technology in China.

According to reports, the electromagnetic monitoring test satellite adopts a general-purpose small-satellite platform equipped with eight kinds of loads such as an inductive magnetometer, a high-precision magnetometer, an electric field detector, and a GNSS occultation receiver, making it the first time in China for all regions and global three-dimensional geophysics. Field dynamic monitoring capabilities, and further promote China's three-dimensional seismic observation system.

In addition, as the first star of the National Geophysical Exploration Satellite Program, electromagnetic monitoring test satellites can also provide space electromagnetic environment monitoring services for aerospace, navigation and communications.

It is reported that the satellite project was developed by the China Seismological Bureau, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.
