[Chemical composition] There may be Fe, Mn, and Zn isomorphisms replacing Mg, sometimes containing FeO up to 10%, MnO up to 20%, and ZnO up to 4%.
[Crystal Structure] Trigonal System; 
a 0 = 0.313 nm, c 0 = 0.474 nm; Z = 1. The brucite structure is one of the typical layered structures (Fig. Y-30): the two layers of OH - are the most closely packed in the hexagonal shape, and the Mg 2+ is filled in all the octahedral spaces to form the structural layer of the coordination octahedron; OH between the two layers in contact and the structural layer - also has a substantially hexagonal closest packing, but the octahedral cation formed unfilled. The structure layer is an ionic bond, and the structural layers are connected by hydrogen bonds. The layered structure of brucite determines the {0001} cleavage that occurs mainly in the form of a plate and develops extremely completely.

[Form] Crystals are often plate-like, scaly, leaf-like, irregular granular aggregates (Fig. Y-31), sometimes into fibrous aggregates, called brucite.

[Physical properties] White, grayish white, reddish brown with manganese or iron ; glass gloss at the fracture. The cleavage parallel {0001} is extremely complete; the cleavage sheet has a scratch. Hardness 2.5. The relative density is 2.3 to 2.6.
[genesis and occurrence] Brucite is a typical low-temperature hydrothermal alteration mineral in serpentinite or dolomite .
[Identification characteristics] characterized by its morphology, low hardness and {0001} extremely cleavage. According to the soluble acid, it is distinguished from talc and pyrophyllite .
[Main use] It can be used as a mineral raw material for magnesium smelting in large quantities. Fiber cement magnesium ore is an important non-metallic mineral material, is an ideal substitute for chrysotile.
