Automatic driving is different from driverless driving

In recent days, the topic of driverless cars has become hot. Some people predict that by 2025, driverless cars will account for 10% of global car sales, and sales will exceed 10 million vehicles each year. Some Internet companies in China have sloganed the creation of driverless cars and have to subvert the Chinese auto industry.

Some people think that it is very difficult for a driverless car to form a climate for 20 years because of the road conditions in China. However, autopilot technology will be increasingly applied to cars.

The two proposal goals are actually not the same

At the "two sessions" this year, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of Geely Holding Co. Li Shufu submitted a proposal to urge the country to speed up the legislation on autonomous driving. He believes that automatic driving can effectively reduce the death rate of road accidents, improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and enhance driving comfort.

Coincidentally, Li Yanhong, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Baidu, also submitted a proposal on driverless cars. It is recommended that the State revise and improve the drone-free laws and regulations as soon as possible to provide institutional guarantees for the development, testing, and commercialization of driverless cars, and to promote the establishment and improvement of relevant technical standards for driverless cars.

According to reports, if the proposals of Li Shufu and Li Yanhong are implemented, they will effectively promote the development of smart connected cars and driverless cars in China.

However, according to Li Shufu, its proposal is not the same as that of Robin Li's proposal. Autopilot and driverless driving are not the same thing, even though many of the two technologies are the same.

Li Shufu believes that the global automotive industry is entering an era of intelligence and entering a new phase in the convergence of automobiles and the Internet. Car networking, artificial intelligence and automatic driving are the three major technologies of smart connected cars. Automated driving is the integration of the three.

Autopilot provides people with the freedom to choose between manually driven vehicles and autonomous driving, in line with Volvo's "human-oriented" concept. Driverless cars that Internet companies want to do do not take into account people’s driving demand options. The same technology, different ideas. Compared with driverless driving, automatic driving is more grounded and respects people's choices.

Automatic driving technology has been widely used

As early as more than 20 years ago, the automotive industry began to develop autonomous driving technology, and a large number of applications in the car. The most typical is automatic cruise technology. After setting the speed, the driver can just hold the steering wheel, without stepping on the accelerator. The car runs at a constant speed at the set speed.

The newly introduced ACC intelligent adaptive cruise system, through radar detection, can automatically adjust the distance from the vehicle in front, automatically accelerate and decelerate, and maintain the set speed. The vehicle safety technology developed by Volvo Cars can also be automatically decelerated or braked according to the distance of pedestrians or vehicles in the non-cruising mode.

After years of arduous research and development, Volvo has advanced the automatic driving technology from the experimental stage to the mass production stage. The X C90 is the world’s first car with highly automated driving capabilities. Since its listing in March of last year, it has achieved great success and has sold more than 100,000 vehicles worldwide. The new Volvo S90 sedan can achieve an automatic driving speed of 130 kilometers per hour.

In terms of autonomous driving technology, Geely Automobile is also at the forefront of domestic auto companies. China's first intelligent Internet-connected boutique, Sun Gili Bojo, which was launched on March 26, has adopted a large number of automatic driving technologies. In addition to ABS, automatic parking and other technologies, Geely Bo Yue is also equipped with a city pre-collision safety system. In the case of a sudden stop before the car decelerates and stops, the system automatically alarms at 1.5 seconds before the collision, and automatically brakes at a collision of 1 second. With EBA brake assistance, when the speed is less than 30 kilometers per hour, the front stationary target is automatically braked to avoid collision.

Bosch's latest ACC intelligent adaptive cruise system is equipped with Geely Bosch. The maximum detection distance is 160 meters, and the radar open angle is plus or minus 45 degrees. If there is a traffic jam in the parking vehicle, it can be detected earlier and the speed and distance can be adjusted automatically to ensure traffic safety. In terms of smart security and smart driving, Geely Bo Yue leads the same SUV model and sets a new benchmark for the industry.

The unmanned parking technology developed by BYD has been applied to individual production models. Many foreign-brand cars sold in China have also adopted a large number of autonomous driving technologies.

Promote drones face many bottlenecks

In California, the United States passed a bill in 2012 that allows unmanned cars to be tested on the road, but it requires a legitimate driver to sit in the driver's seat while driving to operate the car in an emergency.

Google’s driverless cars began road tests in 2010 and several cars have already run hundreds of thousands of kilometers. In addition to Google, there are Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo and other multinational car companies. In these driverless cars, there is a driver in the seat, not the real driver. The test car is equipped with two modes of automatic driving and manual driving. The automatic driving mode is used in the test. In fact, it is more accurate to call it a self-driving car.

Autopilot technology is also widely used in civil aircraft and subways. Civil aviation passenger planes use automated driving techniques to take off, cruise and land, but pilots are still essential.

At present, only drones are truly unmanned. Drones do not require drivers and all rely on intelligent maneuvers. Not only can it complete the investigation mission, it can also carry missiles and attack ground targets. The drone flying in the sky, there is no traffic jam on the road, no complicated road conditions, much easier than driving a driverless car.

One of Google’s founders, Mr. Brin, believes that driverless cars can make roads safer and allow office workers to free themselves from the boredom of driving and ease congestion. At the same time, people who can't drive, including blind and handicapped people, are expected to drive dreams with driverless driving.

However, there are also views that the automatic driving mode can reduce the driver's burden under certain circumstances, such as on a freeway. However, it will also greatly reduce the driving pleasure.

As one of the tools for human travel, the automobile is to ensure the safety of the occupants. In the case where driverless technology is still not 100% sure of safety, the promotion of popularization is not only facing technological bottlenecks but also facing policy bottlenecks and ethical bottlenecks. There is also a conflict with the current road safety regulations. For a long time to come, driverless cars will probably continue to be tested and improved. Autopilot technology will be increasingly applied to production models to help drivers improve vehicle safety and reduce accidents.

Many Internet companies are obsessed with driverless cars and believe that this is a huge business opportunity and will become a gold mine with great potential. However, this gold mine is just a picture of bread in the short term, and automatic driving is the gold mine that can be seen and touched.
