In 2008, the Chinese auto market was affected by factors such as the full implementation of China III emission standards and the global financial crisis. As the engine of the automobile core components, the market changes have a certain representativeness.
From January to November 2008, the cumulative sales of automobile engines nationwide were approximately 8,236,600 units, an increase of 8.89% year-on-year.
In 2007, engine sales were more evenly distributed in the first and second half of the year. In 2008, the gap between engine sales in the first half and the second half of the year was significant: from January to June, cumulative sales were approximately 496.97 units, accounting for 61.9% of the total sales from January to November. The trend of the Chinese engine market in 2008 was clear at a glance, reflecting the changes in consumption of the entire Chinese auto market in 2008.
After entering into 2008, the engine market performed well. In March, it reached the peak of sales, and its monthly sales exceeded 900,000 units. After maintaining a stable operation for two months in April and May, the downward trend began to become apparent from June, which fell by 10.7% in July. Since then, the market has been relatively lukewarm. From July to November, there was no monthly sales of 700,000 units.
Since May 2008, the year-on-year growth in the sales volume of China's engines has continued to decline, and it has entered a negative growth phase since August, which was a 24.7% year-on-year decrease in November. “The fire in the city gates affects the pool fish.†Along with the downturn in the auto market, the engine market has inevitably encountered cold winters, and domestic engine companies have undergone severe tests.
Diesel Engines: March-May sales start to decline month-on-month in June
From January to November 2008, China's diesel engine sold a total of 2.0411 million units, an increase of 10.59% year-on-year, accounting for 25.4% of the total.
China's automotive diesel engines are mostly used in commercial vehicles. Therefore, sales of diesel engines are closely related to commercial vehicles.
In July 2008, China's full implementation of the National III emission standards had a huge impact on the commercial vehicle market, and part of the market demand was released in advance. In 3, 4 and 5 months, the commercial vehicle market was booming, and it also made the diesel engine market perform well. From March to May, the monthly sales of diesel engines reached more than 250,000 units, which represented a year-on-year increase of 27.5%, 27.4%, and 37.2% respectively.
After experiencing the peak of sales, affected by multiple factors including market saturation caused by the rapid development of the commercial vehicle market in recent years, early consumption in the first half of the year and the impact of the global financial crisis, the commercial vehicle market began to face enormous challenges in the second half of 2008. Sales have been declining.
In June 2008, China's diesel engine market continued its three-month boom and it fell sharply, with a 29.8% decline. Since then, except for September, all other months were negative growth. In August, diesel engine sales fell by 5.8%; in October and November, the year-on-year decline rate increased to 12.2% and 44.2% respectively. Last November, China's diesel engine sold less than 100,000 units in a single month, and the market was bleak.
Gasoline Engines: First-half year-on-year increase of over 10% and negative growth beginning in August
From January to November 2008, the cumulative sales of gasoline engines in China totaled 5,977,600 units, an increase of 8.29% year-on-year, accounting for approximately 74.5% of the total.
In the first half of 2008 and the second half of the year, the performance of the gasoline engine market was quite different.
From January to June of 2008, the cumulative sales of gasoline engines in China totaled 362.63 units, which accounted for approximately 60.7% of the cumulative sales for the period from January to November. Each month, the year-on-year increase was over 10%. Among them, March sales of nearly 635,000 units, an increase of 24%.
In the second half of 2008, the market was weak, and the impact of the global financial crisis on the auto market in China was gradually highlighted. From July to November, the year-on-year increase in the sales of gasoline engines fell sharply compared to the first half of the year, slipping to the bottom in August and selling only about 395,000 units. During the period, except for the 6.4% increase in July, the rest of the month was negative growth, and the decline was rapid. Among them, November's year-on-year decline was about 18.5%, and sales volume was about 450,000 units, which was lower than the remaining months except August.
